Art Sans Frontières — Compagnie Moins 5, 2016
“Art Sans Frontières” [Art Without Borders] explores two crucial issues: global warming and the need for concrete action. An absurd duality runs through the show, embodied by skaters performing without ice. Can we still consider them artists? The play seeks to confront the skater’s ego and competitive aspirations with the immensity of the ecological challenge. The story begins in an ice rink that is gradually melting under the shrill sound of an alarm, prompting the audience to board buses to take refuge in a theatre. This transition from freezing cold to heat without ice is symbolic. On stage, a refrigerator propels the skaters one by one, wearing their skates, in front of the audience. This transition raises a fundamental question: “What do we do now?”

Maths Glacées — Compagnie Moins 5, 2015
“Maths Glacées” [Frozen Maths] is the first play created on ice before also being performed off ice. The work, conceived by Geneviève Mante, a mathematics teacher, delves into the depths of madness and excess. It depicts the journey of two individuals with distinct aspirations, yet linked by invisible threads. The plot reveals the tumultuous journey of a learned woman who, sinking into distress and isolation, abandons her life to alcohol abuse and ends up homeless. At the same time, a figure skater focused on the glamour of the Olympic Games evolves in a circle tightly centred on this single goal. Both struggle with their inner demons and the challenges of life, illustrating human fragility and contradictions.

Fête Foraine — Compagnie Moins 5, 2015
“Fête Foraine” [Funfair] is presented as a metaphor for the journey of a high-level skater. Through five skaters, the show explores the various attractions of a funfair, symbolizing the major milestones that punctuate the life of a skater: the search for the ideal coach, the locker room and mental preparation, the intensity of training, the competitive experience, and finally victory and the long-awaited climb onto the podium.

Deutschland — Compagnie Moins 5, 2013
“Deutschland” [Germany] is a contemporary dance performance exploring the themes of the two Germanys. The stage is frozen into an icy surface, a metaphor for the cold and rigid climate characterizing the relationship between these two nations, which were nevertheless destined to merge. The icy elements emphasize the austere atmosphere of an era marked by a totalitarian regime, juxtaposed with the ethereal grace and forced splendour of figure skating. Within this representation, the absurdity inherent in a totalitarian regime coexists with the lightness of the movements, the beauty of the choreography and the sometimes forced smiles of the skaters. The cold emanating from the crystalline ice blends with the sharp, ornate blades, which cut into the frozen surface to better symbolise the division imposed by the Iron Curtain.
In short, ‘Deutschland’ embodies a captivating visual metaphor where the contrast between the coldness of the past and the fluidity of movement offers a striking glimpse into the history of the two Germanys and their path to unity.
